India's capital Rises to Toxic Pollution Following Celebrations

As Tuesday dawned residents of the planet's dirtiest urban center found themselves exposed to dangerously toxic air that fell into the "critical" range.

Extremely High Pollution Levels

Multiple areas of the city recorded an AQI above 500, which equals 10x the healthy level set by the global health authority.

Particular areas, concentrations of PM2.5 and PM10 hit highs of 1,800, amounting to fifteen to twenty times higher than acceptable standards.

Firecracker Ban and Recent Developments

Beginning in 2020, the government had enforced a complete ban on the distribution and bursting of fireworks during celebrations due to their substantial impact to the deadly haze that engulfs the city as the cold season approaches.

Nevertheless in recent months, the current city leadership appealed to the highest court to request a modification of the restrictions.

Officials advocated for allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – previously criticized by conservation groups as being only roughly 30 percent lower impact – as a compromise between "cultural practices and public health".

Judicial Ruling and Reality

Much to the frustration of medical and ecological activists, judicial authorities complied with the proposal, mandating that environmentally conscious fireworks could be set off during limited time windows throughout the Diwali.

Throughout the festival evening, there was extensive flouting of the time restrictions across the capital, with little monitoring regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the eco-friendly variety.

Numerous monitoring devices throughout the capital registered pollution reaching highest levels around the night hours to the most severe measurements recorded during the festival in at least recent memory.

Regional Consequences

Extensive ignition of pyrotechnics during the celebrations also initiated a controversy with neighbouring Pakistan, with representatives in Pakistani Punjab partly blaming worsening pollution levels in the city of Lahore on pollutants coming from India following the events.

Persistent Environmental Crisis

The dangerously high readings of atmospheric toxins in the city have remained as a significant problem for more than 15 years, with the problem showing no improvement.

Around Diwali, the concentration of dangerous airborne contaminants in the environment has been found to spike to significantly exceeding the peak readings ever documented in Beijing, which was previously viewed as the world's most polluted metropolis.

Diverse Pollution Contributors

This crisis in the city is attributed to a convergence of different contributors including automobile exhaust, construction debris, development work, rubbish burning and haze from agricultural fires in nearby regions of neighboring agricultural zones.

Throughout these areas, agricultural workers routinely ignite agricultural waste to clear them quickly, creating hazardous smog that remains stagnant over the city as winter air arrives.

Public Health and Economic Toll

The economic and health toll on the approximately 33 million residents living in the capital region is significant, according to various investigations.

These hazardous conditions causes increased incidence of nervous system, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, and can even lead to malignancies.

The pollution is projected to be responsible for ten thousand untimely fatalities annually in Delhi.
