Critical Role Campaign 4 Unveils the Soldiers Table

From the very beginning of Campaign 4, fresh DM Brennan Mulligan has kept viewers on edge with rich lore, a wide array of heroes, and a thrilling plot including angels, evil spirits, and malevolent powers growing in influence within the city.

Note: Key plot points for Episode 3 of the new season are included.

The Soldiers Table Introduced

The latest chapter ended with a major cliffhanger and presented the initial group of characters who will branch out from the primary party to begin their independent quest, separate from the additional parties.

This warrior group consists of Teor Pridesire (played by Travis Willingham), the agile character (the talented performer), the strong-willed figure (Whitney Moore), Wicander (Sam), and Kattigan Vale (Robbie).

Why Split the Party?

Given a large ensemble, it was obvious from the start that maintaining everyone at the same party would be unworkable.

This explains, the opening chapters of the new season serve as an Introduction, connecting the characters’ stories before dividing into three smaller tables: Soldiers, Strategists, and Questers.

Characteristics of the Soldiers Table

As described by the Dungeon Master, the warrior group is for adventurers who enjoy a typically action-packed combat and conflict-driven story mode where diplomatic options are few and far between.

Upon first impression, figures such as the hesitant healer the cleric might seem mismatched, but the events of episode 3 demonstrate why these particular heroes are best suited for the warrior group.

Motivations for Departure

For one thing, the party understands precisely where to go next after a intense opening clash with the enemy group.

An old friend of Thjazi—whose death started the campaign’s events—manipulated The Crow Keepers for his own means, invading the hidden lair, striking Thimble, and stealing all the magical artifacts to dispose of.

The traitor then settled his debts and ran away to a Halovar stronghouse in Gormalay, Timmony, north of Dol-Makjar, with Cyd hot on his heels.

Character Drivers

Moreover, each character has a individual motive to exit the urban setting:

  • The agile hero, as the close ally and best friend, desires retribution.
  • Kattigan has experience in the region and advises that it is a nasty environment.
  • The warrior and The healer, having resisted his house’s orders to kill the target and instead freed him, have no safe haven.
  • Yet, their reputation as prominent individuals in the influential clan could assist the team reach areas they normally couldn’t.
  • Additionally, Teor pledged a eternal obligation to The cleric for his rescue and will now accompany him anywhere.

Fugitives

Finally, all of them are wanted by the rulers that govern the setting for a range of causes, making remaining behind too risky:

  • The rogue and Kattigan are recognized lawbreakers.
  • Tyranny and The healer betrayed House Halovar and the horde of evil beings they are aligned with.
  • The fighter is marked for death by the family.

This leaves them little choice but to journey toward the remote area in search of Casimir.

What’s Next?

Based on the recent installment’s Cooldown, we learn that the Soldiers table will be absent in the upcoming installment, leaving the other eight participants to round up the Explorers and Schemers parties.

Viewers can expect learning which players will be assigned to which table in the story’s final introductory chapter, streaming live on next week.
